The national standard for park space is between 6.25 - 10.5 acres per 1,000 people. With only 1.9 acres per 1,000, the Harbor Gateway falls far below the mark. The Harbor Gateway faces complex and critical issues as a residential community that is largely neglected by the City of LA, overshadowed by industrial and commercial interests, lacking sufficient public amenities, and suffering from very serious crime problems fueled by racial tension. Through on-site studies, community involvement efforts, and thoughtful design, I have composed a master plan for a park system in the Harbor Gateway South by repurposing various pieces of leftover industrial land as well as carving out connections to public parks in neighboring communities. |
